Softball Pitch Signals 101: Systems, Charts & Why They Get Stolen

Coaches will argue pitch selection for hours. What to throw 0-2. Whether the rise is a waste pitch or a strikeout pitch. Whether you can call a change to a girl who is late on everything anyway.

Almost nobody argues about the part in between — how the pitch you picked actually reaches your pitcher. That's the signal system, and it's the plumbing of the whole operation. When it works, you never think about it. When it leaks, you lose innings you can't get back.

Here's the plain version: what the systems are, how the charts get built, and the structural reasons all of them eventually get read.

What a Signal Actually Has to Carry

Before comparing systems, be honest about the payload. A complete pitch call usually carries three things:

  • The pitch. Rise, drop, curve, screw, change, fastball.
  • The location. Inside, outside, up, down — or a specific zone if you call spots.
  • Everything else. Pitchout, intentional ball, back pick, step-off, hold the runner.

Most systems handle the first one well. The second one is where they start to strain. The third one is where coaches give up and just yell.

That's worth naming, because a system that can only transmit pitch type is not actually calling the game. It's picking pitches and hoping about location — and location is what separates a called game from a guessed one.

The Four Systems You'll Actually See

1. Catcher's finger signs

The oldest one. Catcher puts down one finger for the fastball, two for the change, and so on, flashed between her thighs where only the pitcher and middle infielders can see.

It's fast, it's free, and it requires no equipment. It also puts your youngest, busiest player in charge of pitch selection, and it's fully visible to a runner standing on second base with nothing better to do.

2. Coach-to-catcher relay

You call it from the dugout. Touches to the cap, chest, arm, belt — with an indicator that tells the catcher which touch counts. She reads it, then relays to the pitcher with fingers.

This gets pitch selection back where you want it. The cost is a second link in the chain: dugout to catcher, catcher to pitcher, with a mask and forty feet of sunlight in the way. Every added link is another place the call dies, and when it dies, everyone stands around while the umpire stares at you.

3. Number-to-chart (wristbands)

You call a number out loud — "sixteen, sixteen" — and every player wearing the band flips to the grid and reads what 16 means. Pitch and location in one call.

This is the system that swallowed travel ball, for good reason. It's explicit, it survives a noisy dugout, and it can carry location and offense in the same vocabulary. Its problems are physical: it takes time to look down, find the number, and read the row, and that time comes out of your pitcher's rhythm.

4. Verbal and color calls

"Blue" is a drop away. "Red four" is a rise in. Simple, spoken, no equipment.

Fine for 10U. Against a team with a base coach who is paying attention, you're broadcasting.

How the Charts Are Built

If you're running wristbands, the chart is the system. A typical build:

  • A grid of numbers, usually three digits, each mapping to a call
  • A player insert with only what that player needs
  • A coach key with the full map
  • Multiple shuffled versions, so you can swap between games

The shuffling matters more than coaches expect. A chart you use all season is a chart that gets memorized — sometimes by your own players' parents, who talk. Rotating versions between tournaments costs you a reprint and buys real security.

The build is tedious the first time and fast after that. Plenty of coaches do it in a spreadsheet; there are free generators floating around the coaching forums, and they work fine.

Why They Get Stolen

Sign stealing isn't usually clever. It's patient. Four structural reasons cover almost every case:

Repetition. Anything you do the same way twice gets noticed. If your indicator is always the belt, someone gets it by the fourth inning.

Sightlines. A runner on second has a clean look at the catcher's fingers. That's not a flaw in your system — that's geometry. Some of the best "stealing" is just a runner with a good angle and a coach who taught her what to watch.

The tell you don't know about. Coaches signal the pitchout differently than the fastball without meaning to — bigger motion, longer pause, a glance at the runner. Your body gives it up before your system does.

Visible paper. A laminated card flapping on a wrist is readable at closer range than you think, and the coach key on your clipboard is readable by anyone standing next to you.

The Tradeoff Nobody Names

Here's what makes this hard: security and speed pull against each other.

Add an indicator, and you've made your signs harder to read and slower to give. Add a second indicator and a hot number, and now your catcher is doing arithmetic between pitches. Shuffle your wristband charts weekly, and your players are reading unfamiliar rows in the middle of a bracket game.

Every fix for stealing makes the chain longer. Every shortening of the chain makes it easier to read. Coaches spend years hunting for the system that's both, and it doesn't exist — not with hands and paper.

That's the real reason the category moved. Direct electronic delivery doesn't make signs harder to steal. It removes the thing being stolen. There's no indicator to decode, no chart to read over a shoulder, no relay to intercept — the call goes from your phone to your pitcher's wrist, and the runner on second sees a catcher who never put down a finger.

What the Signal Can't Fix

One caution, because it's the part coaches skip.

A perfect signal system delivers the wrong pitch just as reliably as the right one. Getting "drop, low away" to your pitcher in half a second is only worth something if drop-low-away was the right call, and if she can actually put it there. The transmission problem and the decision problem are different problems, and solving the first one has a way of making the second one obvious.

That's the good news, honestly. Once you stop losing pitches to a broken chain, you start noticing what you're actually calling — which is where pitch calling strategy starts to pay.

Signals are the plumbing. Worth understanding, worth building well, and worth eventually not thinking about at all.
